Kind hearted staff at repairs and maintenance contractor Morrison have built a memorial garden for the residents of a bungalow complex for elderly people in Podsmead Gloucester, following an appeal for help from its residents.

The memorial garden was designed by green fingered resident Sylvia Lacey in memory of former resident Elsie Huggins who recently passed away. Mrs Huggins, an avid gardener, left the residents of the bungalow complex some money in her will to enable them to create an area in which they could all sit and relax.

After designing the garden and getting the plans approved by the other residents Sylvia – who is a member of the Podsmead Tenants and Residents Association – approached Morrison for advice on costs and sources of materials.

Stephen Vile, partnering manager for Morrison, explained: “We first heard about the memorial garden while attending a local residents meeting and jumped at the chance to offer our labour free of charge; as well as help in sourcing materials at a reduced cost.

“Everyone really enjoyed working on the garden and we are very pleased to have been able to help make Elsie’s wish a reality. I know all the residents will enjoy the space enormously throughout the summer.”

The garden comprises a central paved area with benches surrounded by decorative gravel and planting. The planting was carefully chosen to help create a pleasant environment throughout the year both in terms of sight and smells and includes hostas, lavender, roses and perennials and flowering shrubs.

Resident and garden designer Sylvia Lacey said: “I would like to thank everyone at Morrison for their help with this project as we couldn’t have done it without them. Nothing was too much bother and with their help the garden was completed in a week. All the residents are delighted with the beautiful memorial garden and feel it is a fitting tribute to Elsie.”
