A local majorette dance troupe will be performing in brand new outfits thanks to the support of Wakefield and District Housing (WDH), whose Community Grant scheme has enabled its members to ditch their old kit in favour of a new one.
Crofton Starlightning Majorettes, who train twice weekly at Crofton Community Centre, received a £500 Community Grant from WDH’s Local Management Committee (LMC) in order to replace outfits that are more than eight years old.
Betty Sykes, chair of the LMC, said: “The costumes are an integral part of the club, and we want the girls to feel like they are stars. It’s a great activity that encourages children to gain confidence by performing, and hopefully the new outfits will add a little extra sparkle to their routine.”
The club, which is run jointly by Kath Jennings, Tracey Roche and Fi Roberts, has been running for over 12 years and currently has over 30 members. Ages range between four and 17 years with different levels of practice.
The group performs at local gala events and takes part in street parades across the region, with several events already lined up for the summer months.
Kath Jennings, club organiser and booking co-ordinator, said: “We would like to express our thanks to WDH for this grant. Without their input we would have been waiting a long time before we could invest in new outfits.
“A new kit will make the girls feel more comfortable and give them the confidence to perform. We want them to relax and express themselves, which they will be able to do now that we can dress them in the latest costumes.”
