Gateway Team Race For Life

It has become a tradition at Community Gateway Association (CGA) in Preston that every year a team of colleagues take part in the Cancer Research UK Race for Life but this year was slightly different.

Mrs Rhoda Murphy a resident at the organisations Filberts sheltered scheme contacted CGA to see if she could run as part of the team.

So what’s different about that I hear you ask , well Mrs Murphy (75) has first hand experience of what its like to tackle cancer and win and recently she had to have a full knee replacement so she was well qualified to know how important the annual charity event is.

The event took place on Moor Park in Preston where it attracted over 2000 runners from across the city and raised a total of £126,000 for charity.

The team visited Mrs Murphy a couple of days later to see how she was doing after the race and to thank her for being part of the Gateway team gave her a bunch of flowers to congratulate her for finishing in a fantastic 1hour and 4 mins.

Mrs Murphy said “It was great being part of the Gateway Team they really took care of me on the day, I even felt like a real member of the group wearing the famous CGA “Purple” t- shirt.

My daughter and granddaughter walked with me all the way and I was happy when I crossed the finish line. It was a lovely surprise when the team from Gateway presented me with some flowers they were all brilliant!”

Diane Bellinger Chief Executive of CGA who also took part in the race said “ Mrs Murphy is an inspiration to us all, We were really proud to have her as part of our team. Along with the rest of our colleagues who took part this year and in previous years the Race for Life is an event Gateway is delighted to support.”

With sponsorship money still to come in, the team are looking to raise in excess of £1000 pounds.
