A community group for older people in South Kirkby will be flexing its muscles at weekly meetings after a Community Grant from Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) has allowed them to continue their exercise programme with a local fitness instructor.
The Darby and Joan Club, based on Mill Lane, received a cheque for £500 to keep its popular and successful ‘fit and friendly’ class running – and the grant money now enables members to enjoy a post workout meal too.
Eric Clamp, a member of WDH’s Local Management Committee (LMC) said, “South Kirkby Darby and Joan Club plays an important role in the local community. They promote good exercise and healthy eating, and we’re delighted to support such a wonderful cause.”
The ‘fit and friendly’ programme takes place every Monday, and as well as the exercise classes the club runs a quiz and afternoon games of bingo.
Mrs Hames, 85, has been secretary of club for 21 years after retiring from her job at Common Road School. She said, “We’re over the moon with the grant. All of our members really enjoy the ‘fit and friendly’ classes, and after doing all that exercise there’s nothing better than having lovely meal.
“We’re very grateful to WDH for the help because it means we can continue to provide our members with activities that they thoroughly enjoy.”
