Brighton’s first ‘indestructible trees’ are the result of Southern Housing Group’s sculpture competition, in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council, to complement its development, Wellend Villas, completed in 2007.
The two award winning sculptures, named Sylvana 1 and 2, were created by Simon Moss and Peter Layton. Made from galvanised and stainless steel, these trees are guaranteed to withstand the rigours of their seaside location - and will never need pruning. At nearly 4 metres tall, the sculptures are situated on raised decking in the communal courtyards of Wellend Villas. They incorporate integrated low energy LED lighting systems, which add a touch of movement and sparkle after dark.
Area Development Manager, Liz Hills, said:
“Huge congratulations to Simon and Peter on their winning sculptures. The aim of the competition was to give Wellend Villas a strong signature look and works of art that our residents could enjoy. The tree forms give the new development a fun and vibrant personality very much in keeping with the modern design of the development.”
Wellend Villas provides 124 one, two and three bedroom apartments, providing a mix of family accommodation and smaller flats for rent and shared ownership. The two blocks are designed in a contemporary style boasting roof terraces and overlooking a central courtyard where the sculptures are situated.
