More from Housing 21

The doors opened recently to the first residents of Pantiles House, an exciting new housing and care option for older people in Langley Road, Merton.

The extra care scheme of 33 one and two-bedroom flats combines independent living with 24-hour care service if required, meeting the changing needs of residents over time so that they can stay longer in their own homes. Ten apartments will allow older people to buy a share in the leasehold of their new home with the remainder being rented.

The purpose-built scheme for people aged 55 and over was developed in partnership between Housing 21 and Merton Council. It includes an on-site restaurant and hairdressing salon which are accessible to the local community.

Eleanor Pyper, development programme manager for Housing 21, said: “I am delighted that work is now complete and we can welcome the new residents to Pantiles House. I hope they will enjoy the benefits that extra care housing brings, which is being able to live independently with the security of ongoing care and support if needed.”

Councillor Linda Scott, cabinet member for housing and community services at Merton Council said: “This new scheme is a fantastic opportunity for older members of the community who want the independence of living on their own but still want the support, friendships and services that are widely available in a tight knit community.

“I welcome the benefits that Pantiles House will bring to older residents in Merton and hope that those moving in will enjoy their new living arrangements for years to come.”

Among those who have moved in is Nancy “Chris” Standish who said: “I’ve really been looking forward to moving in. My new flat is very comfortable and it will be nice to make new friends and have facilities close at hand.”

The self-contained apartments have fully fitted kitchens, walk-in showers, full under-floor central heating, a secure door entry system with individual intercom and an emergency call system.
