George Culmer Court, Margate
A new housing scheme for adults with mental health needs was officially opened in Margate this week. George Culmer Court provides seven purpose-built, modern apartments with staff on hand seven days a week.
To mark the occasion Steve Leidecker, Director of Operations for KCC Adult Social Services was joined by David Grayson, Chair of Housing 21 along with colleagues and representatives of homeless charity Porchlight, the Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust and Thanet District Council.
The project, the first of its kind in Kent, is part of the county’s £72 million Better Homes Active Lives Housing PFI project providing a total of 340 apartments, including extra care for older people as well as accommodation for adults with learning disabilities. The project is the result of partnership working between KCC and district councils with Housing 21.
The aim of the project is to support residents to live independently while encouraging them to be part of the local community by getting involved in meetings, projects and groups.
The centrally heated flats provide tenants over the age of 16
with their own front door, fully fitted kitchens and either a
walk-in shower or bath. Outside there is a garden for tenants to
share.
