More from Wakefield and District Housing

Apprentices from Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) and partners Bullock have succeeded in their challenge to modernise a WDH property in Ossett.

Different trade apprentices worked together to carry out major improvement works to the property, which is on Pickering Lane, to bring it up to the Wakefield Standard, a standard higher than the government’s Decent Homes Standard.

The team of apprentices started working on the house during National Apprenticeship Week (23-27 February) to raise awareness of the important role apprenticeships play in the business world.

They are now celebrating completion of the project and are delighted with their work and surprised at the extent of their skills. Caroline Lewis, WDH apprentice plumber, said: “It’s been a fantastic project which has given us a chance to put our trade and team working skills to the test. We’ve been supported every step of the way and we’re surprised with how much we could do. I’ve really enjoyed working on the house and now feel much more confident.”

Gary Marley, WDH Employee Training Manager, said: “The apprentice project has been an excellent opportunity for our next generation tradespeople to demonstrate their skills. I’m delighted with their performance and would like to congratulate them on their hard work and excellent approach.”

Scott Boughen, WDH apprentice tiler, said: “The house has given us the opportunity to put what we have learned into practice. It’s been excellent for our portfolios and professional development.”

Specialist apprentices from sub-contractors NCD Electrical, APS Electrical, M&T Plumbing and Heating, DCL Joinery, ADS and Thompsons Electrical have also been involved in the project and have worked with WDH and Bullock apprentices to complete the improvement works to the house.

Kevin Walker, Regional Director from Bullock, said: “We are extremely pleased with the enthusiasm and commitment shown by the apprentices and trainees, who have gained valuable experience and improved their skills on this project. Everyone involved should be immensely proud of their achievements as individuals and as a team.”
