David Martin is in training for the challenge David Martin is in training for the challenge

More from Papworth Trust

A Papworth Trust director is cycling coast to coast to highlight the number of disabled people who are forced to live in unsuitable homes.

David Martin, Director of Strategy and Marketing, is cycling coast to coast in May. The challenge involves cycling 140 miles from Whitehaven on the west coast to Sunderland on the east coast.

“Papworth Trust research shows that 371,000 people in need of adapted accommodation currently live in an unsuitable home,” said David.

“That figure is both shocking and unfair. I am keen to highlight the situation and help disabled people get a fairer deal in the future.”

David has calculated that he will need to pedal around 37,000 times to get from the Irish Sea to the North Sea.

“Every time my pedals turn they represent 10 people who are currently living in an unsuitable home,” said David.

Papworth Trust is a growing Registered Social Landlord (RSL) and a charity that works with disabled people across the East of England.

David is training for the ride by biking the 18 miles to work once or twice a week. However the hills in South Cambridgeshire don’t have much to compare with the Pennines which he and his seven friends who will have to cross if they are to succeed.
