TETRA-G technology from Team Simoco deployed in new digital communications service at world’s busiest international airport

The new digital communications service at London Heathrow Airport has now gone live, and uses TETRA-G technology from Team Simoco to support mission-critical voice and data communications across the airport.

AR-en, the digital TETRA network service deployed by AirRadio at the world’s busiest international airport, is the single largest TETRA network dedicated to commercial use in the UK and provides resilient and reliable voice and data applications for operational processes using a private business radio network.

Team Simoco’s TETRA technology also includes advanced data compression software which maximises the speed of data transfer for live applications, enabling quicker and more effective communication between users to enhance operational efficiency.

A core advantage for customers such as ground staff, baggage handlers and airlines of having a private TETRA communications service is the guarantee of system capacity and performance, so that time-critical instructions can be communicated to the right people immediately.

Brian Nicholson, managing director of AirRadio said: “I am delighted to announce the availability of the latest addition to our digital portfolio at Heathrow airport. It marks a significant step forward in our commitment to deploy advanced applications and features that will assist our customers in improving cost and operational efficiency, especially important in an increasingly testing economic environment.”

TETRA-G technology from Team Simoco has also been used by AirRadio at its Digital Showcase at the group’s Heathrow headquarters to illustrate how data can improve operational performance in a live network environment

Ian Carr, managing director at Team Simoco, added: “Applications such as airport intranet access, task allocation, picture & video transmission and WAP access can play a vital role in the smooth running of the airport by aiding efficient turnaround of aircraft, ensuring on-time departures for passengers and cargo.

Our TETRA-G technology and advanced data compression software play a pivotal role in supporting these new applications, guaranteeing resilient and reliable voice and data communications in any scenario, and ensuring data can be communicated quickly and effectively to support the live nature of airport operations.”

These applications run on standard PDA or ruggedised devices, appropriate to the airport environment, linked from radio handsets using Bluetooth connectivity that allow data or task processing on a Windows Mobile operating system.
