Youngsters will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of some well known local footballers during next week's half term holiday.

Weymouth and Portland Housing (WPH) and Knightstone Housing Association (KHA) have joined forces with Weymouth Football Club's Football in the Community programme to offer coaching to young tenants in Littlemoor.

The training sessions will be held at the Top Club pitch stating Monday February 16 with training aimed at four specific groups - boys and girls aged four to five years, boys aged six to 11 years, girls aged six to 16 years and girls and women aged over 16.

Littlemoor has produced a host of talented footballers over the years and organisers are hoping to continue that tradition.

WPH team leader Ian White explained: "I can think of lots of lads who grew up at Littlemoor and went on to play for one or more of our local clubs. Players like Nathan and Michael Walker, Greg Ayles, Mark Carter, Carl Butcher, Brian Prowse and Alan Newey immediately spring to mind.

"Hopefully these training sessions during half term will uncover some more raw talent among our tenants and we are looking forward to a big turn out.

"We have worked with the WFC Football in the Community programme before and that proved a huge success. The work Tim Davis and his team do is excellent and I'm sure the event will again prove successful."

KHA housing manager John Simpson said he was also looking forward to seeing plenty of youngsters in action.

"Working with players and coaches from the town's Blue Square Premier club will be a great thrill for our young tenants," he added, "and we're just all keeping our fingers' crossed for good weather."

WPH have donated £1,500 to the Terras Football in the Community Programme which will help pay for further coaching weeks at other locations in Weymouth and Portland.

WFC community officer Tim Davis added: "We have lots planned for the event at the Top Club and I would like to thank WPH and KHA for their fantastic support.

"I would urge all their young tenants to come along and enjoy what will be a great week of football training."

Training sessions take place Monday through to Friday next week and more details and start times are available from Tim Davis at WFC on 01305-785558.
