Faulty gas appliances in the home are dangerous and can result in death if they are not serviced properly.

That is why Hackney Homes is now pioneering the use of legislation under the Environmental Protection Act to obtain warrants for forced entry into homes (as a last resort) where tenants have refused to allow access.

As a landlord to over 22,000 tenanted properties across the borough, resident safety is of the utmost importance to Hackney Homes. An annual gas servicing programme is in place, ensuring gas applicance are safety checked by CORGI registered engineers.

Gas Safety Officer, Keith Veness, said: “Since July 2008, Hackney Homes has made use of the forced entry legislation in over 300 properties, which would have otherwise been left unchecked.

“After a 3-step letter process and a personal (cold call) to the property, these tenants would have had ample opportunity to allow our operatives to enter their homes. The forced entries mean we can check the gas appliances and ensure homes are safe for not only our tenants but also their neighbours.”

Hackney Homes send tenants their gas safety check appointment time in the post. Tenants can direct any queries to free phone number 0800 199 124.
