More than 200 members of the community joined together to celebrate African culture at the Peabody Trust event, Ubuntu, held at the Trust's Clapham Junction estate.
Despite the grey clouds, the atmosphere was as vibrant as an African summer’s day. It was smiles all around as MC, Alex Pascall entertained the crowd with his many antidotes and the range of
African bands kept attendees singing and swaying side to side.
There were also African and Carribbean food stalls, African craft stalls and exhibitions.
The event aimed to foster a greater awareness of the history and experiences of African people living in Wandsworth, in celebration of Black History Month.
Led by founding father of the Notting Hill Carnival, Alex Pascal, this year’s celebration was organised by Peabody, in partnership with Clapham Junction Town Centre Partnership Board and
Wandsworth Afro-Carribean Library.
Mayor of Wandsworth, Councillor John Farebrother also showed his support by attending the event and officially opening the celebrations.
Community development manager, Duncan Celland branded the day a huge success.
"It was fantastic to see so many people of all ages and from such diverse backgrounds enjoying a day celebrating Africa and Black History Month," he said.
"This truly inclusive event goes from strength to strength and we look forward to hopefully doing it all again next year."
