TODAY IN HOUSING

A new residents association has been established in the New Broughton regeneration area of Salford. The Broughton Community Association (BCA) was set up earlier in the year and has now been formally constituted.

Geoff Tysen is Chair of the new organisation. He said: Our aims and objectives have now been developed and a key priority for the group will be to monitor the standards of all service providers working in the regeneration area.
We dont want any broken promises and we will hold partners to account if this happens.

We also want to positively promote this community with the wider area and work with other local groups to develop and maintain a good community spirit. We are really keen to raise the profile of young people by creating a youth group but overall our message to the people of Broughton is - tell us your views and opinions and we will make sure that your voice is heard.

Key organisations involved in this massive regeneration scheme are Countryside Properties, Salford City Council, Salix Homes, Space New Living and Contour Homes.

Contour Homes, one of the leading providers of affordable housing in the area has played a pivotal role in setting up the BCA.

As one of the regions largest residential social landlords we are always keen to develop residents associations in the areas we work, explains Samantha McHale from Contour Homes.

Developing an association provides everyone living in the area with an excellent route through which to air their opinions both good and bad. A constituted group also has the right to apply for a variety of funding which otherwise would not be available and the BCA has already been invited to apply for up to £5000 from the Salford Voluntary Sector Commissioning Fund.

Contour Homes has provided training for Geoff and his colleagues and employed the services of a local consultant to help the group complete their funding application. Contour will continue to provide on going formal training to the BCA as well as offering a supportive and mentoring role.

Geoff adds: The regeneration plans for this area will continue for many years to come and its an ideal opportunity for residents to have their say on what is essentially a whole new neighbourhood.

The BCA is very keen for new members living in the Broughton area to join the association. Membership is free. For more information please contact Geoff Tysen 07722 872 732 or contact Contour Homes on 0161 920 8062.
