Poplar HARCA stages east London regeneration celebration
More than 3,500 people attended a free family festival organised by east London housing association Poplar HARCA to celebrate the regeneration of the local area and its 10th anniversary.
Poplar Festival began with a colourful parade led by a steel band and street performers. Local young people and shoppers joined the parade and danced their way through Poplar’s streets to
officially open Poplar Festival with a musical extravaganza.
A vibrant mix of music ran throughout the day representing Poplar’s broad ethnic mix. The Poplar community also showcased their talents with show-stopping music, dance and drama
performances.
There were fun-filled activities for all ages including an under fives area, an active zone, a well being zone, tea dance tent and arts and crafts work areas.
There was also the opportunity for residents to get involved in future regeneration plans for the Poplar area. Poplar HARCA staff were on hand to talk through some of the initial ideas
and to find out residents’ views and ideas on how they would like to see their area developed.
Steve Stride Chief Executive of Poplar HARCA said: “Poplar Festival celebrates the commitment and energy of our residents who have played a crucial role in the regeneration of the Poplar
area.
"A huge amount has been achieved over the last ten years which would not of been possible without the support of our residents. It's been fantastic to see the community out on mass taking part and
enjoying Poplar Festival.”
