On Wednesday 16 July a group of young Christian Fields residents won a Try Angle award recognising the efforts and achievements of local young people. The young people won the award for the work they did on their documentary DVD, Bricks and Roses which was supported by Gravesham Borough Council and Kent County Council and follows the demolition and regeneration of their neighbourhood. They faced very stiff competition in the Volunteering and Service to the Community category so were absolutely delighted with their win!
The group of young film makers, aged 10 to 15, created the documentary last year. It follows the lives of residents from Christian Fields as the neighbourhood begins to go through a major regeneration. The film captures residents feelings as the landscape changes around them and their homes are demolished to make way for brand new homes. The film also includes footage of a demolition from the interior of a property, filmed on a web cam as well as designs of the new properties being built at Christian Fields.
The Try Angle Awards were established in 1995 in the Thanet area of Kent to recognise the efforts and achievements of young people and are funded through contributions and sponsorship from local councils, companies and organisations . Over the last 13 years the profile of these awards has grown and they went countywide in 2001.
The Christian Fields representatives won their Gravesham and Dartford area final and received certificates, medals and a trophy which were presented to them by Councillor Tony Pritchard at the Christian Fields street party on Friday 25 July. The regenerated communitys young film makers hope to be selected to go through to the countywide Spirit of Try Angle Awards which will take place in Margate, Kent in November this year.
Local resident, Mary Cox, who was featured in the DVD, says: Bricks and Roses was a great project because every generation of the community was involved and it brought us together. Everyone at Christian Fields is very proud of what the young residents have achieved.
