Riverside Housing's Sidcup silver surfers and arty types got together for an award ceremony to celebrate community learning.

The Neighbourhood Learning Awards ceremony, organised by Adult Education, Bexley, recognised around 200 locals who have taken part in community learning projects across the borough. A £23,000 funding award from Riverside Housing led to Sidcup locals taking advantage of free IT courses held at Saxon Walk Community Flat and Adult Education, Alma Rood, Bexley.

Tenants and residents are taking part in courses ranging from computing to watercolour painting. The courses, arranged in association with London and Quadrant Housing Trust and delivered by Adult Education, Bexley, are aimed at improving the lives and skills of tenants and residents, raising aspirations and improving career prospects.

Jane Wiseman, community initiatives officer for Riverside Housing said: Weve had an excellent response to community learning opportunities since the programme began late last year. Its great to see families learning together. Some tenants have taken up more than one subject and have really developed a taste for learning.

Deputy Mayor of Bexley, Councillor Ray Sams presented certificates of achievement to learners, some of whom exhibited their watercolours at the ceremony.

Jane added: We are hoping to extend the range of courses on offer starting in September. New courses include health and safety and first aid.
