The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) will take the first steps in its planned restructuring when it advertises for a Managing Director at the weekend.

The advertisements will appear in the Saturday edition of The Guardian and The Sunday Times.

The new role has been created as a result of the ongoing structural review of the RTPI and the Managing Director will be the first appointment in that process.

It will be the Managing Director’s responsibility to plan, monitor and manage the programmes underpinning the operation of the RTPI, with a specific focus on income generation.

The Managing Director will report to the Secretary General who, as well as being responsible for the overall leadership, direction and management of the RTPI, will focus on the strategic direction of the Institute and policy issues.

RTPI Senior Vice President Martin Willey said: “The decision to appoint a Managing Director has been taken in order to help the RTPI grow to meet the evolving needs of its members.

“The RTPI’s sphere of interest has broadened significantly in the past decade and the demands placed on the Institute and its staff have multiplied. That trend will continue in the future.

"As an organisation we need to make sure that we have the day-to-day operational capacity to deliver the right services to our members and ensure that the practice of town planning and the interests of planners are furthered.

"This will be an ongoing process but the appointment of a Managing Director responsible for maximising income is an important first step in restructuring the organisation to meet future challenges.”
