On Thursday 19 June Gladden Court sheltered scheme in Harlow, Essex welcomed ten students from Passmores School as part of the schools annual Community Day. The students and residents worked together to clean up the communal garden and plant some herb pots and planters for the residents to keep.
Passmores School holds Community Day annually to demonstrate the importance of getting involved in their neighbourhood and helping others. Students are allowed to replace timetabled lessons with community work on a project decided by the school.
At Moats suggestion, a project working with older residents at Gladden Court was implemented as part of the 2008 event. Older residents and Passmores students overcame prejudices about one another through taking time to chat as they worked.
In fact, the two generations got on so well that Moat hopes to initiate a longer term intergeneration project. This will use coffee mornings, work experience and activity sessions to break down intergenerational barriers and allow those involved to learn from one another.
Vera Holliday lives at Gladden Court and says: All the residents have thoroughly enjoyed today and we all look forward to doing it again next year. The children are a credit to the school and the
teachers and
I think I enjoyed myself as much as they did!
