A newly formed youth football team in Sunniside, near Whickham, Gateshead, has been given a boost after contractor Morrison Facilities Services stepped forward to sponsor the team.

The team now has a brand new full home and away team strip which means that it can join local football leagues.

Morrison provides repairs and maintenance services to over 21,000 homes managed by The Gateshead Housing Company. In addition to providing repairs and maintenance, Morrison is keen to support community initiatives in areas where it works.

The Sunniside Community Association formed the youth football team to provide young people with the chance to put a team forward into local community football league.

Julie Mitchell, chair of Sunniside Community Association, said: We are really delighted to have received the support and sponsorship from Morrison Facilities Services. The team now has a brand new kit that can be worn with pride as the team joins local leagues and hopefully starts to climb to the top of them!

James Moody, resident liaison manager at Morrison, added: Its great to see the team in its new kit and were really pleased to be able to provide sponsorship and give local people the chance to get involved in sport.

Morrison is always looking for opportunities where we can promote and support community initiatives and get involved in the areas where we work."

Community police support officer Colin Wilson from Northumbria Police has joined as the teams coach to teach and help develop their skills.

Note to editors:
Morrison Facilities Services is one of the largest providers of social housing services. It looks after over 400,000 homes in the UK, providing repair and maintenance services for councils, housing associations and arms length management organisations (ALMOs)
