Micheal Western and Drilon Demaj were warmly welcomed at the Manchester United Training Ground recently after getting through the first round of trials for the 2008 Homeless World Cup.

The Homeless World Cup, which was founded by Mel Young in 2001, is creating a level of change never before seen by social inclusion initiatives.

More than 94% of participants say that it has a positive impact on their lives and 77% make significant changes in their lives as a direct result of their involvement, such as coming off drugs and alcohol, moving into homes, jobs, education, becoming coaches and players.

It has triggered and supports grass roots football projects in over 60 nations involving over 25,000 players who are homeless in training for Melbourne, Australia in December 2008.

Axiom's Foyer in Peterborough is very proud to have two young residents (Micheal Western and Drilon Demaj) who have made it through the first round of the Homeless World Cup trials.

The next set of trails are being held mid April - Axiom would like to wish them both luck and hope that they get through to the squad and on to a trip of a lifetime in Australia.

Drilon said "I wasn't nervous and I really want to go through to the next round and then the next one and then the next one! I'm really looking forward to April and will invest time into practicing as much as I can. I will eat, drink and sleep football!"

Terence Mason, Project Worker from The Foyer said "We had a great day at Man U, even though the spectators were not allowed on the pitch area, we thoroughly enjoyed strolling around the arena and spending time getting to know the other players."

"I was very proud to watch our residents; even though Micheal fell ill on the day, he's really determined to make it through to the next stages".

The Foyer provides accommodation with opportunity for young people and a health-promoting community in which they can grow and thrive.

By integrating training and job search, personal support and motivation with a place to live, they provide a bridge to independence and a chance for young people to realise their full potential.
