TODAY IN HOUSING

Congratulations are in order for David and Sandra McKinnon, Sheltered Residents from Kestrel Court in South Bretton, who were runners up in the Connecting People TPAS Awards.Sandra and David attended a Fanfare evening at the stylish Hotel Russell in London on 13 March.

The excited couple had a fantastic evening and were delighted to come second to the winners, Saffron Housing Trust, for their ecological Green Day initiative. The award sought to recognise community projects that brought significant environmental improvements to their local communities around the country.

Although the McKinnon's came second, they come first in the hearts and minds of their fellow residents at Kestrel Court. They have made such a big difference to their local community, due to their ongoing efforts, which have created some spectacular gardens. The gardens actually won the Best Communal Garden in the Peterborough in Bloom Awards!

Louise Laudat, Scheme Manager at Kestrel Court, said:

"To sum up, this couple through their selfless actions have really changed the ethos of what essentially is traditional accommodation for older people. They have injected life into the heart of the scheme which has permeated through to other residents, their families and the local community".

Karen Chambers, Tenant Involvement Manager, added:

"Sandra and David have demonstrated that life does not cease in retirement and have provided a means for other residents, less able or active that themselves, to get involved in caring for their environment in what ever way they are able."

"Axiom is very committed to Tenant Involvement and Sandra and David are model examples of just exactly what can be done by getting involved. I am delighted that they came 'runners up', they deserve the accolade".

In a letter to Axiom following the event, Sandra and David wrote:

"This is just to say a big thank you to all concerned for the nomination into the TPAS Connecting People Awards".

"We had a lovely time in London at the award ceremony; we were very lucky to get as far as we did as most of the people we spoke to were from larger places than ours. People had done so much to help themselves and others to improve their environment, it was quite inspiring to hear about their projects".

"We would once again like to thank you all very much for the nomination".

Axiom Housing Association would like to congratulate Sandra and David for their achievements.
