London & Quadrant has announced the first homes in London to be delivered to Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Set for completion in September 2008, Vale Street in Lambeth continues the housing group's commitment to the development of sustainable housing.

The development will provide 60 quality homes for general needs rent and shared ownership including a high percentage of large family houses and apartments.

Key partners in the development include the London Borough of Lambeth, Higgins, Hunter and Partners, Stock Woolstencroft and Wessex Engineering Services,

The site was purchased by L&Q from the London Borough of Lambeth in March 2006 for 100% affordable housing ‘with low energy requirements’.

Lambeth Borough Council has since identified the Vale Street development as the borough’s key sustainability demonstration project.

Vale Street is an urban residential scheme that:

  • Has sustainability integral at every stage of the design and strategy for the development
  • Aims to address climate change with an innovative design approach and deliverable technology
  • Was developed in conjunction with planning and environmental departments
  • Contains a mixture of housing types for both rent and shared ownership
  • Promotes an alternative sustainable lifestyle

David Montague, Group Chief Executive of L&Q is pleased that Vale St demonstrates L&Q’s commitment of building for the future.

He said: "L&Q is focused on its long term plans for building and maintaining sustainable communities.

"Our aim is to continue to provide quality homes and services in line with the Governments housing targets. Over the next five years we will house 50,000 families which is a tremendous task but one that we look forward to delivering on.

"The Vale Street development is a perfect example of how we use our expertise and innovation to provide much needed high quality, affordable, sustainable homes”

Chris Lee, Lambeth Council executive director for regeneration and housing, added: “Lambeth Council is committed to providing good quality affordable homes, and this project, with environmental sustainability at the heart of it, will benefit families for many generations to come.”
