John Holdich OBE, meets Roy and Jean Head as they move into their brand new shared ownership bungalow in Burton Street, Peterborough. Mr and Mrs Head moved into their new Shared Ownership bungalow and expressed their thanks and gratitude to Axiom Housing Association, Peterborough City Council, the builders (FE Peacock's) and partners.
The brand new bungalows, in Burton Street and Monksfield Mews, are linked to the flagship Extra Care facility Friary Court. An impressive purpose built scheme for older people, provides its residents with care and extra support whilst they maintain their own independence.
The new bungalows at Burton Street and Monksfield Mews aim to revolutionise housing for frail older people in Peterborough; it is only the beginning of what will be provided for older people in the coming years.
In the Summer of 2008, Axiom will be opening a brand new Extra Care Facility in Alma Road, Millfield with five properties being offered for sale under shared ownership (four 1-bed apartments and one 2-bed).
John Holdich OBE and Cabinet Member for Housing, Regeneration and Economic Growth said:
"I have absolutely no doubt that Axiom Housing Association and Peterborough City Council are leading the way nationally in the provision of older people's accommodation".
"The population of over 85 year olds is set to reach 37% in the next 10 years in Peterborough alone. Peterborough in partnership with Axiom, will be well placed to meet the growing needs of our local older community".
The Head's who moved into the accommodation to gain the support of Friary Court, due to Mr Head's failing health, have travelled the world four times over. Having been in the Navy for most of his career, Mr Head said:
"Following what we have called 'a funny turn' Jean has been worried about my health over the last few months, so we decided to move into a shared ownership bungalow, which has enabled us to keep our independence as well as equity in our own home".
"We are delighted to have moved in and our neighbours are wonderful. We are so happy and have no plans to move ever again!"
Mrs Head has already used the facilities of Friary Court which boasts a hairdressers, mini shop, IT suite, supported bathrooms, lounge, craft room, library plus guest rooms which their three sons, who live outside of Peterborough, can use whilst visiting their parents.
It has been said that you can judge a community by the investment it makes in its young and the way it treats its elders. Axiom is proud to take the care of the elderly in Peterborough to the next level - fit for the 21st century.
