St.Helens Council’s Dog Control Service have been dealing with a spate of incidents in which dogs are being abandoned in local parks and woodland.

One dog, a black Labrador cross, was found tied to a bench in Thatto Heath Park, having spent the night out in the cold.

The dog managed to escape, snapping it’s lead as the Dog Control Officers approached.

However, due to the help of the public it was finally taken in and is now being cared for by the Dog Control Service.

The Dog Control officers would like to thank the public for their help.

In a separate incident two dogs were found tied to park gates. They were found cold, wet and tired as a result of their ordeal.

It is thought that these may have been abandoned in the mistaken belief that they were illegal breed dogs, however we can confirm that neither is.

The first is a white English bull terrier cross named Kia and the second is a black and white Staffordshire bull terrier cross named Chico. Both dogs are now being cared for by the Service.

A spokesman said: “Dogs do not need to be abandoned in this way, which causes untold stress to the animals. If a dog needs to be rehomed then there are a number of business and charitable organisations which can take in unwanted pets.

“However the public do need to be aware that due to a high demand for rehoming some organisations do have to operate a waiting list system.”

If anyone is needing to rehome a dog then please call the Dog Control Service on 01744 456 473 who will be able to provide contact details for these organisations.
