'Silver surfers' prove you're never too old to learn
Two Walsall Extra Care home residents with 152 years between them have proven that age is no barrier to learning – by scooping awards for their IT skills.
Lillian Smith, known as ‘Smithy’, a resident at Jenner House in Beechdale, and Eileen Allen, a resident of Furlong House in Bloxwich, have both received Certificates of
Recognition.
The pair will be presented with the awards by comedienne Jo Brand at a ceremony hosted by broadcaster Sue Beardsmore at Bescot Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Lillian, aged 93, said: “Activities are really important to keep the brain active and the fingers supple.”
Since taking an intermediate IT course she is now secretary of the Jenner House activity club.
Eileen, 59, said: “I never thought at my age I would ever be able to use a computer, its really boosted my confidence and due to a recent illness has kept me going knowing I can access the IT
suite at Furlong House.”
Despite being a novice, Eileen completed a 10-week introduction course.
Mark Pearce, Assistant Director of Care and Support at Accord Housing which runs both of the Extra Care Schemes, said: “Age should not be a barrier to anything and it is wonderful to see
these two ladies get the recognition they deserve.
“We encourage and help all of our residents to try new things and fulfil their dreams, whether that is driving a tank or learning Spanish.”
