Mrs Knibbs with her carer
The doors opened last week to the first residents of Belsize Court, a new housing and care option for older people in Sutton.
Belsize Court, an extra care scheme of 62 one and two-bedroomed flats in Burnell Road, combines independent living with 24-hour care, thereby meeting the changing needs of residents over time and
allowing them to stay longer in their own homes.
Ten apartments will allow older people to buy a share in the leasehold of their new home with the remainder being rented.
Lyn Robinson, court manager, said: “I am pleased that work is now complete and we can start to welcome the new tenants.
“I am sure they will all enjoy the benefits that extra care housing brings.”
The £6million purpose-built scheme, developed in partnership between Housing 21 and the London Borough of Sutton, includes an on-site restaurant, hairdressing salon, shop and day care
service.
The new tenants will be moving in gradually over the next six to eight weeks.
One of the first people to receive the keys to her new apartment was Ann Knibbs. Commenting on their new home, Mrs Knibbs said: “I’m very excited and have been very much looking
forward to moving in.
“The flat is nice and spacious and it will be fantastic to have facilities so close at hand.”
Colin Stears, executive member for adult social services and housing, said: “This is an exciting initiative that will deliver additional housing opportunities for Sutton residents that offers
first-class facilities and services to meet the demands of modern living.”
Facilities at the scheme will also be open to the surrounding local community, providing a range of activities and support networks for older people.
The new day care service is due to open in April, when the existing service at Ludlow Lodge in Wallington will move across.
