Construction work has started at Tovil Green in Maidstone on a 40 apartment scheme for older people under the Better Homes Active Lives partnership.
The new development is part of a £72 million Public Finance Initiative (PFI) project to deliver more homes across the county for older people.
The rented extra care apartments will provide a genuine alternative to residential care, giving tenants their own home in a communal scheme with 24 hour care and support services should they need
them.
Tovil Green Court, which is being developed by Housing 21 in partnership with Kent County Council and Maidstone Borough Council, will include a communal residents’ lounge, restaurant, bar,
gymnasium, hairdressing salon, shop, internet cafe and landscaped gardens.
Lynne Clumpus, Head of Kent PFI for Housing 21 said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Kent County Council and Maidstone Borough on this very exciting development.
“It is one of seven extra care schemes across Kent which will provide apartments for people aged 55 and over.”
Kent County Council Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services Kevin Lynes said: “Our aim for social care is to create independence, freedom and choice.
“It's vital that we're able to support people who wish to live independently, and these developments are a major part of achieving this.
“In partnership with Maidstone Borough Council and Housing 21, we can enable more older people to continue to enjoy a fulfilling life as part of the community.”
Each apartment is designed for wheelchair access and will have its own sitting room, fully fitted kitchen, either walk-in shower or bath and non-slip flooring to the kitchen and bathroom.
An on-site team will provide care and support, tailored to meet individual needs.
The new scheme, which consists of 26 one bedroom and 14 two bedroom apartments is being constructed by United House Construction.
In addition to the extra care facility a separate 7 bedroom unit, Treacle Mine Court, will provide supported homes for adults aged 16 years and over with learning disabilities.
