PRESS RELEASE
A special, freephone helpline is available next week for older people who are finding day-to-day tasks a strain.
The advice line can help anyone who is starting to struggle with things such as getting out of bed or shopping alone, find out if they are eligible for 'Attendance Allowance'.
This extra money helps people maintain their independence and is available to people over 65, who are finding day to day tasks more difficult or who may need help with personal care.
Set up by Leicestershire County Council and Age Concern Leicestershire and Rutland, the freephone helpline will be staffed by experienced benefits advisors and will be available from Monday (21st
January) until Friday (25th January). Home visits can also be arranged to help with filling out forms.
Attendance Allowance can amount to £2,000 - £3,000 a year and is one of the few benefits not affected by income, savings or property. It will not affect any other benefits received and
in some instances, can increase people's income.
The helpline is 0800 5677 047 and is open between 10am and 4.30pm.
David Sprason, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said: "Just making a quick call could make such a big difference to people's lives and I would urge anyone who has started to find everday tasks
that bit more difficult to ring for advice."
