Nearly half of Britons believe they will have installed their own solar panels or wind turbines in the next 10 years, a new survey reveals.
And more than half say most of the light bulbs in their homes are already energy saving, according to the new Trends for Living report.
78% of people questioned would do more to make their homes greener but were put off by the cost.
And just 5% of Britons surveyed vowed to make their homes as eco-friendly as possible regardless of the cost.
An expert panel of 500 interior designers and people from around the UK were questioned in the survey released by the Ideal Home Show.
According to the survey, 83% said they had never bought eco-friendly paint of decorating products
Curiously, 90% of men were found to be more interested in making their homes eco-friendly compared to 82% of women.
And, surprisingly, 18% of women questioned declared they had no interest at all in making their homes greener.
The survey showed that vegetable steamers were the most used kitchen gadget last year with 49% using them.
The east Midlands has more vegetable steamers than anywhere else, with 65% of people using their steamer regularly.
And an American-style fridge/freezer is the most desired object for UK kitchens, cited by well over a third as the item they would most like to buy.
Three house designs at the forefront of ecological thinking will be unveiled at the Ideal Home Show at Earls Court in London next month.
The Ideal Home Show, from March 9 to April 1, promises to offer a 24-day extravaganza of the latest in home design, must-have products and accessories.
