The BBC's No Home opinion survey, released today, shows the public still thinks of rough sleeping when they think about 'the homeless'.

Although rough sleepers are the most visible and vulnerable homeless individuals, they make up only a small percentage of the thousands of homeless in this country.

However, compared to individuals and families made temporarily homeless by financial or other problems, getting rough sleepers back on their feet requires much more than a bed for the night – a fact recognised by respondents to the BBC survey.

Jenny Edwards, chief executive of Homeless Link, said: "It is enormously encouraging that a random sampling of the British public shows such a clear, instinctive understanding that there is more to homelessness than being without a roof over your head.

"For people who've suffered the emotional trauma of long term homelessness, positive programmes to build their self esteem are crucial, as are educational opportunities that can lead to employment and a home of their own."

Homeless Link, the umbrella group for organisations working with and for homeless people, recently launched a campaign and road map for ending homelessness in the UK by 2022.

An interim goal of ending rough sleeping by 2012 has been endorsed London Mayor Ken Livingstone.

Jenny Edwards said: "In the 40 years since Cathy Come Home shocked the nation, a great deal has been accomplished in the UK. Safety nets exist to keep families together and provide them with accommodation. But there are still thousands of individuals who slip through the cracks every year. It is time for the final push to end this social blight forever.

"Politicians are beginning to recognise the need not only to build more homes, but also for much more emphasis on prevention and positive activities. The BBC survey makes it clear that the public know this is what must be done."
