1st September 2010,

Multi-disciplinary building sustainability and compliance consultant, Stroma tendered for the competitive bid in fulfilling the Northern Lincolnshire & Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's three year Carbon Reduction Commitment programme. Shortlisted down to the last two out of five submissions, Stroma was successful in being appointed to deliver long-term support to the Trust in connection with the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme.

Additionally Stroma is looking to significantly reduce energy costs and carbon emissions through complex Dynamic Simulation Modelling (DSM) assessment, investigating the potential impact, cost effectiveness and payback of a range of improvement measures to not only compliment the CRC compliant strategies but to also improve buildings' performance and occupant comfort.

Working alongside the Trust, who have previously adopted the use of SystemsLink Energy Manager Software, Stroma will make use of the M&T system in identifying energy usage, wastage and overspend, whilst delivering a thorough assessment and improvement strategy and achieving ongoing CRC scheme compliance.

Rob Molyneux, Technical Manager, comments:
" Our expert knowledge of the SystemsLink Energy Manager software provides us with a great starting point to work with the Trust, who are forward thinking with regards to Energy Management and carbon reduction. We are excited to work with a major provider of healthcare and look forward to supporting their CRC obligations into the future."

1. Stroma is a multidisciplinary company operating throughout the UK and Ireland and specialising in monitoring, measuring and improving building energy performance.

2. Stroma offers a range of independent services for all aspects of energy performance analysis or improvement. Whether for new build developments, existing building stock or refurbishment projects, our multi-disciplinary team can provide the necessary calculations, consultancy and reports to assist organisations in measuring, monitoring and managing their energy consumption and carbon emissions. Moreover, we can assist with the development of bespoke, practical and financially-viable improvement strategies.

3. The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) is a new mandatory emission trading scheme that aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced in the UK. This is vital to achieve the UK government's overall target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% by 2050, compared to the 1990 baseline.

4. Our team of consultants can guide organisations through the mechanisms of compliance with the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) as a minimum, but can also formulate a bespoke strategy for reducing the CO2 emissions of existing building stock incorporating all, or a combination of, the following:

  • Due diligence energy report (CRC)
  • Energy audit/survey
  • CO2 emissions forecasting
  • CO2 benchmarking
  • Life cycle costing and payback feasibility
  • Dynamic Simulation Modelling

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was established as a combined hospital and community Trust on 1st April 2001 and achieved Foundation Status on 1st May 2007. It was formed by the merger of North East Lincolnshire NHS Trust and Scunthorpe and Goole Hospitals NHS Trust and operates all NHS hospitals in Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Goole. Its name reflects the wider geographical area in which the Trust is a major provider of health care.

The Trust works in partnership with the Hull York Medical School and Sheffield Medical School providing comprehensive undergraduate teaching for Year 3, 4 and 5 medical students. Running three hospitals, separated by considerable distances, poses a significant service delivery challenge, but also allows the Trust to serve a wider population. NLAG also provides a range of services delivered outside of hospital settings.
