Sculptor John Sydney Carter, FRBS, curator and exhibitor of ‘Heart, Head and Hands’, the ninth annual sculpture exhibition held by the University of Leicester in its Botanic Garden in Oadby, Leicester rediscovered his ancestral roots through his art.
Explaining his love of working with metal, he said: “In my early days of creating sculpture I purchased an old forge complete with tools from a local blacksmith who was closing down. I have recently discovered that part of my family go back to 1650 when we were blacksmiths in a nearby Northamptonshire village.”
His work in the past has been inspired by found objects with some reference to the human form and his three pieces in ‘Heart, Head and Hands’ – ‘Joker’, ‘Knot’ and ‘Red & Black’ - reflect this starting point.
‘Heart, Head and Hands’ features 63 sculptures by 41 sculptors from as far afield as the US, Iceland, Germany and Italy, as well as works by local and regional sculptors. The exhibition is well supported by the highly prestigious Royal British Society of Sculptors.
The exhibition is at the University of Leicester Botanic Garden, Glebe Road, Oadby until Sunday 19th September. The garden will be open free of charge, except for special open days (see the website www.le.ac.uk/botanicgarden for details).
Normal Botanic Garden opening times are 10am-4pm Monday-Friday all year (except for the Christmas-New Year period) and on Saturday and Sunday from the third weekend in March to the second weekend in November. The entrance to the Garden is in Glebe Road, Oadby.
