A £300,000 extension to improve mixed sex accommodation at a south Staffordshire community hospital is on target to be completed at the end of the year.

South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) Provider Services has been given the cash to improve patient facilities on Andrew Ward at Sir Robert Peel Hospital, Tamworth.

The grant from the Department of Health’s Privacy and Dignity Challenge Fund, was given to the PCT to make necessary changes to the ward to guarantee patients won’t share bathroom facilities.

Work to build extensions onto three of the four bays with new toilets, showers and wash areas began in September and it should be completed by the end of year and will be able to accommodate patients by the end of January.

Jackie Holt, PCT Provider Services Estates Manager, said: “We are delighted work to improve Andrew Ward is progressing so well. Most of the external work is complete and work will soon begin on the internal fittings and fixtures.

“The changes will improve the patient experience and ensure we are fully compliant with the Department of Health’s privacy and dignity guidelines.”
