A Wear Valley housing company is part of a consortium working
together to change attitudes to immigrants and asylum seekers
across the North East.
Dale & Valley Homes, as part of the Durham Equality and
Diversity Partnership, has produced a training DVD aimed at
dispelling myths which surround these groups.
Designed as a training tool for service providers, the DVD
concentrates on finding a place to live; working and studying; and
family life.
Louise Butler, equality and diversity officer for Dale & Valley
Homes, said: “One of the myths we are hoping to bust is that
the North East is overrun by asylum seekers.
“In fact there are fewer than 5,000 asylum seekers in the
entire region, less than a quarter of one per cent of the
population.
“Another popular myth is that we pay more council tax because
these people are here. Actually they are funded by central
government and immigrants generally make a net contribution of
£3 billion to the UK economy.
“This DVD is an interesting way to open up debate on such
widely held beliefs, many of which have no basis in fact. It looks
at things from the view point of refugees and asylum seekers and is
an excellent tool.”
