Box of delights supports older tenants' independence

A new resource to support sheltered housing tenants in leading active and independent lives has been launched by Anchor Retirement Housing.
The Big Box activity toolkit was officially launched with a series of activities including table tennis, indoor bowls, soothing massages and calligraphy, at Anchors Sandyhurst sheltered housing scheme in Leicester on Monday 3 November.
The boxs easy-to-use index cards are designed to spark ideas and develop tenants own interests, enabling them to take part in the activities and interests they enjoy, whether scheme-based group events or individual pursuits in the community.
It also includes a reference resource for scheme managers offering best practice guidance on supporting activities.
The Big Box was the result of detailed research with input from tenants, staff and the National Association for Providers of Activities for Older People (NAPA).
People Development Manager for Anchor Retirement Housing Karen Rogers said: The key to its design is that it doesnt just focus on group activities, it recognises the importance of individual interests.
Anchor is committed to helping older people get the best out of life and the Big Box will be a great help in supporting tenants who want to keep up favourite pastimes or try new activities.
