Anyone who wishes to nominate a drug treatment team, police officer or volunteer who has gone that extra mile to tackle drugs has just ten days to make their local hero an example for the nation.

In all, two Tackling Drugs, Changing Lives awards are available: one for an individual and another for a team.

Each winner will receive £10,000 for their project to spend on the prevention or treatment of drug use.

Previous winners include Leeds City Council Needle Collection Service and Essex's Young People's Drug and Alcohol Service.

Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker said: "I know there are thousands of people around the country who are making a difference in tackling drug use and I want to hear from the individuals and teams who are going the extra mile to help change lives.

"Drug use is at its lowest level for 13 years and I know those at the frontline have played a vital role in reducing the harm caused by drugs and making their communities safer.

"The Government is committed to tackling drugs through tough enforcement, education, information campaigns and, where appropriate, treatment so that communities can be free of drug related crime and drug users can lead positive lives free of illegal substances.

"I encourage anyone who knows an individual or team who has really made a difference to nominate them for an award."

Anyone can nominate a drug team or individual for an award which is England and Wales wide.

On Monday September 1 an expert judging panel, chaired by the Home Office, will begin the process of selecting ten finalists who will attend a glittering ceremony in London at the end of this year, when the two worthy winners will be announced.

The 2007 individual winner Vicky Ward - who works at Turning Point Adult Treatment Services in Sheffield - received her award for working tirelessly to get homeless people into treatment and the best quality of care. Vicky has been invited to be a judge at this year's awards.

The Essex Young People's Drug and Alcohol Service won the team award. They offer support to young people who are affected by drug use.
