England will run out of landfill capacity for household rubbish by 2020 with many sites expected to be full long before then, it emerged today.

London's non-hazardous landfill sites are expected to be full by the end of 2010, while those in the east of England, south east and north west will all be full by the early months of 2013, according to figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Environment Minister Jane Kennedy said Environment Agency estimates made at the end of 2007 showed London's landfill sites had just three years of remaining capacity, while the east of England's had 4.2 years and the north west had five years.

The south east's sites had 5.1 years of capacity remaining, followed by the south west's 6.2 years, north east's 7.6 years and east midlands' 7.8 years.

Only the west midlands (10.8 years) and Yorkshire and the Humber (12.5 years) had more than a decade of capacity remaining.

The figures were released in a written parliamentary answer to shadow environment secretary Nick Herbert.
