Northampton Borough Council organises summitNorthampton Borough Council organises summit

Councillors, heritage experts, environmental organisations and community groups in Northamptonshire came together for a 'summit' examining the area's heritage at Northampton's historic Guildhall, today.

'Make Your Heritage Work For You' was one of a series of events taking place across the region organised by the East Midlands Heritage Forum. The Forum, created in 2001, brings together agencies to protect and promote the region's historic environment.

The day's activities were hosted by Northampton Borough Council, and began with a briefing on developments which will affect the future of the area's heritage.

These include the Draft Heritage Protection Bill, which the government has published to improve the system of statutory protection, and strengthen public involvement in heritage. Delegates identified the contribution historic places can make to the county at a time of rapid development.

Dr Anthony Streeten, Regional Director for English Heritage and Chair of the East Midlands Heritage Forum, said: "Northamptonshire is rich in historic places. But heritage doesn't just tell us about the past - it's also a force for the future.

“History and the historic environment underpin the area's prosperity, and make an important contribution to the quality of life of local people. Today has been about unlocking that potential. With vision and leadership, across the public, private and voluntary sectors, the area's heritage will help local authorities and many other agencies achieve social, economic and environmental benefits."

Councillor Richard Church, Northampton Borough Council portfolio holder for regeneration said: "We were delighted to host this historic summit. It is important that we all learn from the past, keep all that's good and use it to help build a better future."

Delegates were also able to sharpen their practical skills and shape the future of their area at an 'influence and practice' training session in the afternoon.
