Council looking for Lewisham's first 'eco-street'
As part of its drive to tackle climate change at a local level, Lewisham Council is looking to find the borough’s first ‘eco street’.
Residents can nominate their road - the winning street will receive an environmental make-over.
With so much in the news these days about climate change and energy price increases, there is a wealth of information and ideas that people can access to make their homes more energy
efficient.
Lewisham’s ‘eco street’ project will give residents a helping hand to make their street more environmentally friendly.
Councillor Susan Wise, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said: “In the same way that Lewisham's residents compete to become street Recycling Champions, this is a opportunity for them to
become the borough's first ‘eco street’.
"The winners will receive an environmental makeover which not only individual households can gain, but the whole street will benefit.
“We hope this campaign will encourage Lewisham residents to think about changes they can make to their homes and ideas they can use to make their lifestyle more climate-friendly.”
The only criteria is that nominated streets should have at least 100 households, preferably made up of more than one type of dwelling (ie, houses, conversion and purpose-built flats).
Here are some of the things that residents on the selected street will receive, as part of it’s environmental package:
- A free energy assessment for each home
- A free pack of environmentally friendly ‘goodies’ for each household
- Financial support for measures to make their home more sustainable and to reduce energy bills
- Information and advice on how to reduce, reuse and recycle
Improvements for the street include:
- Local clean-up events
- A ‘sustainable living’ event for the street
- Development of a car club for the street
- Opportunities to support local wildlife and other biodiversity improvements
To request an application form call 020 8314 7234 or visit the Lewisham Council website at www.lewisham.gov.uk, and from the homepage enter ‘eco street’ in the search field.
Deadline to receive entries is Wednesday September 10.
