TODAY IN ENVIRONMENT

Walk leaders are wanted for a series of short rambles based around South East Cornwall’s towns and villages.

Caradon District Council is looking for people with knowledge of either local history or the local environment who would like to share it with others by leading walks of no more than a mile and a half.

Pat Gormley, Caradon’s special projects officer, said: “We’re planning to launch a new Doorstep Ramble scheme offering short walks to introduce people to walking for health and pleasure.  But we need more people to volunteer to act as walk leaders.

“It’s something that can be done as a hobby, and the walks can be on routes that prospective leaders already know.  We can offer plenty of practical support for those who want to become leaders, including free training in leading walks, route planning and health development.

“It’s a great way to get out and enjoy some fresh air and make new friends.”

The Doorstep Ramble scheme follows on from the success of Caradon’s longer monthly rambles, which regularly attract a hundred or more walkers.

A Walk Leader Training Day takes place on Wednesday 30 July from 10.00am to 4.00pm at the AONB office at Cotehele Quay.  The day is free, but places must be booked in advance by ringing Dave Readman on 01726 627816.

To find out more about becoming a walk leader, or to learn more about Caradon’s walks, contact Pat Gormley on 01579 348749.
