Careless or thoughtless litter louts will be hit in their pockets in the latest campaign being run by Gloucester City Council.

The ‘Litter - £75 a throw’ poster campaign is currently being run in and around the city centre.

People tossing away litter – anything from cigarette ends to cans or takeaway food wrappers  - could find themselves slapped with an instant £75 penalty.

City rangers armed with head cameras are patrolling the streets and will issue the fines to anyone caught dropping litter.

Gloucester hit national headlines with its original ‘zero tolerance’ campaign.

Council Leader, Paul James, commented: “It had a dramatic effect on cleanliness levels in the city centre. But we feel that people need reminding that they have a responsibility to keep the city clean.

“Our poster campaign has been running for the past few weeks and we will now be seeing a return to more instant fines.”

One of the city council’s key aims is for Gloucester to be a ‘thriving 21st century city’ – and promoting cleaner streets is one of the ways in which they want to achieve that.

Added Councillor James: “We aim to be one of the cleanest cities in the country within the next four years.”
