With 81 per cent of the UK adult  population being concerned about climate change, the freight and haulage industries recognise they have to do their part to take action.

The Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE) and Freight Best Practice will be running a series of free events across the UK to assist businesses in cutting their emissions, saving on fuel costs and minimising their collective carbon footprint.

The first of these events will be held at the University of Warwick on July 17 and will be run by the IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers, a professional sector of the SOE) and Freight Best Practice (FBP) in conjunction with the Department for Transport.

“The IRTE occupies an important position in the road transport industry,” said Ian Chisholm, head of technical services with the SOE.

“We are natural partners for the DfT, alongside FBP, for promoting improved efficiency and better skills within the industry as well as advising on the best equipment or systems.”

Around 86 per cent of freight is moved by road  and the government is working with industry to reduce CO2 emissions from freight transport.

Chairing the event will be Tim Blakemore, editor of Transport Engineer. He will be joined by John Parry, Member of the IRTE Council, fuel efficiency expert Dr Michael Coyle, MD of Ray Smith Group David Browning, Hatcher Components MD Brian Getley and speakers from Michelin Tyres and MAN Trucks.

I think it's great that the haulage industry is willing to stand up to it's responsibility.
