A free public lecture at the University of Leicester is set to
compare European cities with Leicester
Professor Franco Bianchini will deliver the lecture called
‘Creative Cities’ at 5.30pm on Wednesday 24
March.
Professor Bianchini is the author of a number of books on urban
themes, including Urban Mindscapes of Europe, Cultural Policy
and Urban Regeneration, as well as the groundbreaking, The
Creative City. He will continue the series of lectures on
‘The City and the Country’, hosted by universities
across the East Midlands, by discussing European comparisons with
Leicester and other medium-size cities.
Franco Bianchini has acted as advisor and researcher for many
organizations including Arts Council England, the UK government's
Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Council of Europe and
the European Commission.
Professor Douglas Tallack, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) and
Head of the College of Arts, Humanities and Law at the University
of Leicester, commented:
“Cities in the UK have much to learn from European cities,
not least in maximising the economic and social benefits of culture
and creativity. This lecture by Franco Bianchini continues the
series of public lectures at the University of Leicester on the
themes of cities, the countryside and their intersections. The
series continues on 5th May, when Adrian Jones will speak on the
theme of ‘Can planning save the city and the
countryside?’
“I have been delighted not simply by the very large turnout
for the series but by the proportion of the audience from
off-campus, and the interactions during the Reception following the
lecture. I hope that this week's lecture will, again, bring
together people from the region and the University of
Leicester.”
The lecture takes place at 5.30pm on Wednesday 24 March in the
Attenborough Film Lecture Theatre at the University of
Leicester.
