A free public lecture at the University of Leicester on 10 March discusses difficulties facing the growing multicultural workforce in Irish organisations.
Dr Mary Williams Prendergast will present her research about the challenges of accommodating the growing numbers of migrant workers in Ireland.
In her doctoral inaugural lecture, Dr Prendergast will focus on issues of integration, language acquisition, learning and development within diverse cultures in different Irish organisations.
Her findings have shown that there is no co-ordinated strategy provided by the Irish government for migrant workers, that there is no English language training provided and that Irish organisations do not take cultural differences into account in the provision of information and training for their non-Irish workers.
Dr Prendergast believes that it is vital that appropriate opportunities for learning and development are made available for Ireland’s increasingly diverse workforce and that the Irish government needs to be more proactive in its approach to non-Irish workers.
Dr Prendergast commented:
“A lot depends on government policy and how migration is managed, and Ireland will need to take a proactive approach to migration management. The policies and practices in the training and development of non-Irish workers are paramount to this success.”
The lecture is taking place at 5.30-6.30pm on Wednesday 10 March in Ken Edwards Lecture Theatre 3, University of Leicester.
