The Centre for European Law and Integration/Internal Market research cluster of the School of Law at the University of Leicester is organising a half-day seminar entitled “Recent developments in European Union Internal Market Law: Towards convergence of the fundamental freedoms?”’.
The seminar will take place on Friday 19 March 2010, at 1 pm at the Charles Wilson Building, University of Leicester and is expected to finish at 5 pm on the same day.
The seminar is organised as a response to a series of important judgments delivered by the European Court of Justice in the context of each of the EU fundamental freedoms - cases such as C-110/05 Commission v. Italy (mopeds) and C-142/05 Mickelsson and Roos (on the application of Keck); C-205/07 Gysbrechts (on Article 29 EC); and C-112/05, Volkswagen (on the free movement of capital), as well as the increasing numbers of cases in the area of the free movement of persons.
Four of the papers will deal with recent developments in the context of each of the four freedoms (free movement of persons, goods, services and capital) and one paper will provide a description and analysis of the new social security Community Regulation (Regulation 883/2004).
Dr Alina Tryfonidou, from the School of Law, said the seminar will have a dual objective:”It will provide an up-to-date and critical analysis of the development of the four freedoms and of secondary legislation in this area and it will examine whether we are moving towards a convergence among the freedoms”.
“The seminar brings together a number of leading academics specialised in the area of Internal Market Law as well as an official of the European Commission. It seeks to provide an up-to-date analysis of, and reflection on, some of the most important recent developments in this core area of EU law. It is expected to be of interest to academics and practitioners alike.”
