On Monday 11 July Moat residents in Tunbridge Wells attended an information and advice day at Birkdale on Upper Grosvenor Road, a Moat sheltered housing scheme offering 28 homes.
Moat has 431 residents living across the Tunbridge Wells area with no central development or meeting point for them to get involved. This information day allowed residents to meet local service providers in their area and find out more about volunteering, adult education, local support groups and clubs and benefits.
Voluntary Action Within Kent gave people advice and support with getting into voluntary work, apprenticeships and improving CVs. The Adult Education Centre promoted their forthcoming courses and offered advice to residents about subsidised courses for over 50s and those on benefits. The Mental Health Resource Centre let everyone know about the activities they offer, including computer lessons, exercise classes and creative writing courses. The Citizens’ Advice Bureau had a dedicated benefits advisor on hand who responded to people’s concerns and queries and offered advice about the current changes to welfare benefits.
One attendee said; “I would never have had the confidence to walk into the Citizens Advice Bureau or book an appointment for benefit advice as I know how busy they are and I tend to just give up. I was so impressed with the support they and everyone else provided today and am grateful to Moat for organising it.”
