The Planning and Climate Change Coalition, led by the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) and Friends of the Earth, has written to the Ministerial teams at the Departments for Communities and Local Government; Energy and Climate Change and for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, urging Government to ensure that that the planning system makes a full contribution to meeting the climate change challenge.
TCPA Chief Executive, Kate Henderson said:
“Planning is a vital tool for tackling the impending crisis of climate change, in particular on issues such as flood risk, energy and our future quality of life. The coalition Government’s changes to national policy provides an opportunity to put social justice and sustainable development at the heart of the system. This is not about top down imposition but about access to good advice and co-ordination for communities who we know want to reduce their vulnerability to climate change. We strongly urge that those parts of the draft ‘Planning for a Low Carbon Future’ Planning Policy Statement which relate directly to local action be published now to ensure transformational change is enabled quickly.”
