Tamworth Borough Council this week took a hard line on drug dealers making it clear that tenants convicted of drug offences will be evicted.
A 32 year old tenant, Gavin Kennedy from 69 Carlcroft, Stonydelph, was convicted on several counts of possessing and supplying Class A and C drugs and given a 30 month custodial sentence.
Following this conviction, the Council did not hesitate to take possession of the property which the tenant was also dealing drugs from and causing anti social behaviour affecting other residents in the area.
Councillor Mary Oates, portfolio holder for Quality of life, said. “We are taking a zero tolerance approach to rid our streets of drugs; Tamworth Borough Council will not tolerate tenants’ drug dealing, especially from our properties.”
“This is a serious breech of tenancy not to mention the associated anti social behaviour. This particular tenant has caused significant problems and been a general nuisance which has greatly impacted on the quality of life of other residents in the area. Tenants found to be guilty of dealing drugs will be evicted from their properties”.
The case was heard at Tamworth Civil courts, where a possession order was granted and the defendant ordered to pay court costs of £150 and any outstanding rent arrears.
