Entrepreneurs, business support agencies and local authorities will be told ‘the time is now’ for social enterprise to drive the West Midlands forward at a major event later this month.

Social Enterprise West Midlands (SEWM), the regional body responsible for championing the sector, is launching its vision for social enterprise at the ICC on 27th January, with more than 100 delegates set to debate the challenges and opportunities facing one of the economy’s fastest growing areas.

The half-day event will see the launch of ‘The Time is Now’, a social enterprise prospectus for the West Midlands, that calls for greater understanding, support and innovation to make social enterprise the first choice in the region.

Kevin Maton, Network Director of SEWM, explained:

“The prospectus aims to galvanise everyone who operates in the sector from the social entrepreneurs who make it happen, to the consumer who benefits, the public sector who procure services and business support agencies who are there to facilitate growth.

“We truly want social enterprise to become part of everyday life and in order to achieve this we need everyone to be on board and respond to the calls to action we will be setting out.”

He continued: “With the recent growth we have seen and the recession-fuelled desire for our economy to be more diverse, there has never been a better or more important time for social enterprise to establish itself as a credible, sustainable and mainstream business model.”

The interactive event will be using table top technology to gain immediate feedback from delegates, who will also be hearing from flagship social enterprises Halo Leisure, PM Training, Gateway Family Services, Marches Energy Agency and Fordhall Community Land Initiative.

Jas Baines, Chief Executive of Ashram Housing Association and Advantage West Midlands Board Member, will close the event.

“I’m delighted to be part of what is going to be an important occasion for social enterprise in our region and look forward to debating how we will ‘all’ play a part in its development.”
